NW 'Words' of Life

I’m an idea guy. My imagination has one speed: ON! And when ideas combine with my “golden retriever-like” enthusiasm and the endorphine rush that follows, I often seek out someone to tell about it.

Yesterday morning before work, I was quickly scrolling through the blogs that I subscribe to (currently 10) when I saw a video that absolutely set my mind in motion. It was an example of something I call “marketing fusion” – or pulling a concept from one industry to set oneself WAY apart in marketing another.

In this case, the subject was SEO – or “search engine optimization.” If you don’t know what that is or why it’s important to businesses, it’s basically about making Google and other search engines put your website as high on their results list as possible when someone does a keyword search. Like everything in business, it’s an art and a science. And a HUGE industry is built around SEO.

So, this 2-minute video features hip hop artist “The SEO Rapper” rapping about… yeah, SEO. It’s brilliant. I love hip hop and I love marketing fusion, and this video nails it. I watched it over and over, dancing around the kitchen with Hayden matching my every step while mama was off on her morning workout.

Naturally, when I got to work, a hip hop beat still in my heart, I announced to my office mates Tyler, Katie and Kristi that we would become the “Hip Hop Realtors!” We’d write a rap song about every new listing, every phase of the business, and it would be such an effective tool for serving our clients and getting their homes sold that, in no time, we’d literally take over the world.

Result: Tyler and Katie laughed so hard they nearly cried. Kristi LOVED the idea! And collectively, I loved their reaction. Two against it, one for it. As an idea guy, that’s a perfect score, especially when you consider today’s quote, which I read a few years ago in a book by Yvon Chouinard‘s (the founder of the Patagonia clothing company) titled Let My People Go Surfing. Here’s his quote:

“If EVERYONE thinks you’ve got a great idea, you’re too late!”

I’ll let you know when we cut our first single. Naturally, I’ll post it here on the blog. Now kick up the speakers and enjoy the video:
