The Porch at Boulevard Park

IMG_7298_299_300EnhancerBellingham has a lot of structures I love, and as time rolls on I intend to photograph many of them and share them here on this blog. To kick it off, I shot some photos of the Boulevard Park Pavillion — better know by those who built it as “The Porch at Boulevard Park.”

The south-facing, open-air, timber-framed shelter was designed by architect Greg Robinson, built by Cascade Joinery, and artistically adorned with paintings by Tom Wood, all as a tribute to Mark Whitter — a Cascade Joinery timberframer who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2004.

Some 200 people donated time, materials, cash or services in helping to create the structure, and their names are all carved in the stainless steel bands on the giant posts.

Cascade Joinery founder Jeff Arvin gave a touching speech on June 20, 2009, as he dedicated The Porch to Mark Whitter. You can read the speech on the Cascade Joinery blog by clicking here.

On the day I took these photos, August 29th, 2009, Heather and I had just finished paddling on Bellingham Bay, me in my surfski and Heather on her SUP. It was a glorious, sunny day, and we saw at least a dozen of our paddling friends out on the water surfing wind waves.

Boulevard Park is a piece of Heaven, and it’s a great place to stage a paddle, run, ride… anything you might want to do outdoors for fun. Enjoy the pictures, and I hope they inspire you to get out and visit The Porch at Boulevard Park. After you’ve seen it, come back and tell me what you think of The Porch. I love talking about structures I love.
